Iceland, a country which is in total economic ruin, has appointed Johanna Sigurdardottir, a “gay woman” as its first female Prime Minister. I am not really so interested in internal Icelandic politics. What I found notable is how the AP article only uses the term “gay woman.” What is wrong with the word ‘lesbian’?
- Icelanders usually have last names that are derived from their parents’ names. If they’re named after their father, their last name ends with ‘sson’ for men and ‘sdóttir’ for women. After their mother, it becomes ‘uson’ or ‘udóttir’. Sometimes, they use both. Such as Dagur Bergþóruson Eggertsson, the former mayor of Reykjavík.
- The Icelandic language contains the letters: þ (pronounced ‘th), Æ (pronounced like ‘eye’) and Ð/ð (pronounced like the ‘th’ in ‘them).
