I am not a vegetarian. I don’t eat beef or pork, but I do eat poultry and seafood.
That being said, I think this NY Times article is worth a read, as you might not be getting what you think you are if you buy ground beef.
It talks about a girl that got deathly ill from E. coli after eating “American Chef’s Selection Angus Beef Patties.” After research, it was found that the meat contained scraps and “fatty trimmings…with ammonia to kill bacteria.”
The way the safety control works is that the USDA allows companies to come up with their own safety plans, and the companies themselves don’t test the meat as it comes in, but rather after it is processed.
All-in-all, the article is lengthy and troubling. And certainly worth knowing if you eat ground beef. Not for any moral concerns, but for that of your own health.
